Winter Storm & Freeze
Ice, snow and deep cold, often with power loss (think Texas 2021).
What it is / 01
Extended freezing temperatures with snow or ice that can knock out power, freeze pipes and make roads impassable for days.
Warning signs
- Winter Storm Watch or Warning issued
- Forecast lows well below freezing for multiple days
- Grid operators ask for conservation
Before / 02
- Know where your water shut-off valve is
- Insulate exposed pipes and drip faucets
- Gather wool blankets and sleeping bags
- Fill bathtubs for flushing water
- Fill your car's gas tank
During / 03
- Pick one small room to heat and close off the rest
- Layer clothing, hats and socks, including while sleeping
- Never use ovens, grills or camp stoves for heat indoors
- Watch for signs of hypothermia and frostbite
After / 04
- Check for burst pipes before turning water back on
- Follow any boil-water notice
- Clear snow from vents and exhausts
