What do three unqualified flatlanders look like hiking in the Rocky Mountains?
Well let me tell you—it’s almost too amusing not to share.
Moving from sea level to the land of fourteeners has been nothing short of an adventure. After waiting two years to adopt our son and waiting another year for the circumstances to align to move us to Fort Collins, Colorado, we’ve decided we are exhausted from waiting and ready to try something new and fun together.
Enter the 52-Hike Challenge!
This year, we are challenging ourselves to complete 52 separate hikes together as a family. We love this little family of ours but the past three years have forced us to invest in just about everything except ourselves. And it’s time to make a change.
So why are we completing 52 hikes to help unite our family? And why do we want to share these experiences with you? Three reasons really. Click here to read more!
After each of these 52 hikes, Matt and I will post weekly updates which will include three amazing resources:
AN OPEN & HONEST REVIEW OF EACH HIKE
As a reminder, if you are looking for a serious, technical review by experienced orienteering experts, you’re in the wrong place. If, however you are looking for honest insight from a beginner’s point of view in the family context, then we’ve got you covered.
AN AMUSING SHORT STORY OR MEMOIR
A SHORT STORY
This is where you’ll want to grab a cup of coffee or a cold brew, sit on your back porch and live vicariously through the humorous mistakes and experiences of our family. I promise the content will be light and funny so you won’t be disappointed.
A BRIEF AND LIGHTHEARTED PODCAST
Yep! You read that right! For each hike we complete, we will be sharing a 20-30 minute podcast outlining our experience, some funny or exciting experiences we had along the way, and a general update of what this journey has been teaching us so far. You won’t want to miss it!
Matt is a middle school teacher (God bless him…), an avid rock climber, husband, and father extraordinaire. Born on the coast of North Carolina, this beach bum is learning what it means to live in the mountains for the very first time in his life—and what better place to learn than the Rockies, am I right?
Matt loves just about anything outdoors, building computers, reading Amazon reviews, and Thai food. This year, through this challenge, he hopes to learn how to live in the moment, prioritize his health, and maybe even learn to fly fish along the way.
Amanda is an educational consultant, writer, and ministry assistant for a local church. She loves that her jobs allow her to work from home and spend valuable time with her son.
In her free time (just kidding, she’s a mom—what is free time?), Amanda loves to meet friends at a local coffee shop and skim Pinterest for DIY ideas she will probably never finish.
From the mountains of North Carolina, Amanda is excited to return to the hobbies she loved in her childhood. After ten years at the coast, she feels a little rusty though. This year, she hopes to get her mountain legs back, try her hand at photography, and build more attachment with her son.
Desi is just about the cutest kid you’ll ever meet. Bias or no bias—sorry it’s the truth!
Desi joined our family in May of 2017 from Seoul, South Korea. He is very animated and expressive so even though there was a language barrier early on, he has never had any trouble communicating exactly what he wants.
Desi is obsessed with anything with four wheels. He can tell you the correct name of any vehicle you’ll see on a construction site and is quick to correct his momma when she gets it wrong.
Desi can’t wait to start hiking and climbing. Through this next year, our hope for him is that he would continue to attach to us and know what it means to be a Doherty.
Our family recently moved from Wilmington, North Carolina to Fort Collins, Colorado to help with a local church plant. In only a few months’ time we’ve already had our fair share of adventures! But there is always room for more. So here’s to an amazing journey so far and for an incredible opportunity for 52 more adventures in 2019! We hope you’ll join us!
