Food Safety: When to Toss Fridge and Freezer Food

The 4-hour and 48-hour rules, explained simply.

A closed fridge keeps food safe for about 4 hours. A full freezer holds for about 48 hours, a half-full one about 24.

Toss if above 40°F for 2+ hours

  • Meat, poultry, seafood
  • Milk, soft cheese, yogurt
  • Leftovers and cooked pasta
  • Cut fruit

Usually OK

  • Hard cheeses
  • Butter
  • Whole fruits and vegetables
  • Condiments like ketchup and mustard

When in doubt, throw it out. Keep an appliance thermometer in both the fridge and freezer.
